I've recently been interested in astral projection and out-of-body experiences (OBEs). What I realized when I came back to this book and started from the beginning recently is the man in the cave may have had an OBE, and having that very real experience of consciousness separate from body could have been the very source of his enlightenment. I believe it's similar to what the original Buddha realized as he sat alone in the forest.
A deeper understanding of consciousness holds the answers to what reality really is underneath the big, shared illusion. As part of my spiritual journey (which included the Four Agreements), I became obsessed with near-death experience videos as well. So many different people telling such similar stories leads me to believe that death absolutely isn't the end!
What western society has on its hands is a spiritual sickness. I think over-reliance on scientific materialism is a big part of it, and not giving any credence to the metaphysical or "paranormal." Science can't capture the whole picture - we have to nourish our spirits as part of holistic wellbeing.
